It has become an everyday occurrence that someone from the republic of Skopje makes a statement such as “ the real name of Thessaloniki is Solun. The Greeks have changed it because they do not like Macedonian [sic] names.” Some of them say it because they do not know better. They read translated publications, which give them the name they are familiar with. Others know the facts, but they find it more profitable not to disclose these facts. So I have decided to publish three pages from Fanula Papazoglu’s dissertation “Makedonski gradovi u rimsko doba” or “Macedonian Cities during the Roman Times” in Serbian. There is no doubt that the people from the former Yugoslavia understand the text, especially those in Skopje.
As one can see there are no cities such as Solun, Lerin, Voden, Kostur, Bitola, and so on. Instead one sees Tesalonika, Linkos, Edesa, Orestia, Herakleia. This is only a sample of the names of these cities that Fanula Papazoglu, the great historian, a Greek speaking Vlach from Monastiri wrote. As Dr. Papazoglu put it, “This paper was submitted as a doctoral thesis of the Faculty of Philosophy and defended on June 24, 1955 before a committee composed of full professors Dr. Victor Novak, Dr. Milan Vudimir, Dr. Milosh Djuric, Dr. Mihail Dinić and Dr. Ilija Sindik. All members of the committee on this occasion to express my gratitude for their great helpfulness”. The dissertation was published in journal Жива aнтика or Living Antiquity in Belgrade on April 1956. Chief Editor of the journal was Mihail Petrushevski.
